Caister-on-Sea

Caister-on-Sea's wide, sandy, unspoilt beaches consists of a north beach and south beach with grassy dunes, superb selection of popular holiday centres, caravan and chalet parks attract hundreds of holiday makers to this village just 3 miles from Great Yarmouth. The village has plenty of shops, restaurants, cafés, pubs, supermarkets and other amenities, making it a particularly ideal self-catering base. The village is also home to Caister Lifeboat, a proudly independent coastal rescue crew with a vistor centre.

The name Caister comes from the Latin word ‘Castra' which means fortress. The Romans first settled in the Great Yarmouth area in the first century, building a ‘Saxon Shore' fort in Caister in around AD200 which was occupied by a unit of the Roman army and navy, forming one of the chief Iceni towns until the end of the 4th century. The partial excavated remains, including wall and ditch sections and building foundations can still be seen.  

At the western edge of town, Caister Castle, built in 1432 houses an impressive Classic Car Collection. Between Caister-on-Sea and Great Yarmouth, Yarmouth Stadium stages greyhound racing three nights a week and also regular stock car racing for a fun night out.
