The pretty village of Thurne boasts an iconic Broads National Park landmark - Thurne Draingae Mill. A short walk along the Weaver's Way walk brings you to nearby Repps-with-Bastwick where the Wind Energy Museum is hidden away. Find out about the power of the wind in our short film.
Thurne is a small village and beauty spot to the north west of the borough of Great Yarmouth at the confluence of the River Bure and the River Thurne. Instantly recognisable as the location of Thurne Mill with a few shops, a lovely church and a large pub.
It's an ideal location for passing boats to moor up and have a breather, a picnic or a stroll. There's a large playground next to the Lion Inn pub for the kids to play and some great walks passing through the village, including the long disctance National Trail 'Weaver's Way' which runs for 61 miles between Cromer and Great Yarmouth through some beautiful countryside. Overnight mooring is also available.
The village is located at the end of a dyke beside the famous white painted tower Thurne Drainage Mill built in 1920. The mill has special open days in Summer, during National Mills Weekend in May and during Heritage Open Days in September. The owner also runs the open-air Wind Energy Museum which you can find in the nearby tiny riverside village of Repps-with-Bastwick.
Thurne is a great location to watch the Three Rivers Race - a popular sailing course which covers 50 miles on 24 hours.
